SANTA CLARA — Here is how the 49ers’ four quarterbacks — or three, in Thursday’s case — looked at training camp practice, in which several starters rested or were battling health issues:BROCK PURDYUnlike last week, Purdy did not require back-to-back days off after two consecutive days on the QB1 job. Lozano | Associated PressHOUSTON — Embattled Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton’s years-delayed trial on securities fraud charges will have to wait until his separate impeachment trial is concluded, lawyers and the judge in the case said Thursday.During the brief court hearing in Houston that was attended by Paxton, his lawyers asked state District Judge Andrea Beall to delay any decision on setting a trial date until the attorney general’s impeachment trial, set to begin Sept. 5, is finished. Dan Cogdell, one of Paxton’s attorneys, said he expects the impeachment trial to last a couple of weeks.“What I would request is we come back after that case is resolved,” Cogdell said during the hearing. The San Jose Earthquakes were able to sneak in one final player addition ahead of the MLS transfer window’s closing — and it was a rather noteworthy one, too.The Quakes acquired forward Matthew Hoppe on a 12-month loan from Middlesborough, a club in England’s second-tier Championship.Hoppe, 22, has played in eight matches for the U.S. men’s national team already in his career, including playing in two matches in 2023. (KRON) -- A man who is accused of kidnapping a woman and holding her in a cinder block cell in Klamath Falls, Oregon, previously lived in the Bay Area, according to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Negasi Zuberi lived in Oakland for six years between October of 2012 and March of 2018.Zuberi, 29, also lived in Antioch from between November of 2019 and February of 2021, and Vacaville from between November of 2017 and February of 2019. The suspect also spent time in Southern California briefly, spending several months in Azusa and Granada Hills in 2016, the FBI said. (KRON) -- Two men who allegedly stormed into a high-stakes San Jose poker game, held the card players up at gunpoint, and stole $30,000 in cash have been arrested.The arrested men were identified by the San Jose Police Department as Nicholas Boyd, 39, and Anhkhao Ledo, 39, both from San Jose. The duo was booked into jail on charges of robbery, kidnapping, and assault with a deadly weapon. The poker heist happened on May 4 inside a house on Ambrose Court, police said."Over 10 victims were inside of the residence playing poker, when two armed masked suspects smashed the rear sliding door and entered the residence. The suspect made the victims get on the floor and demanded money. One suspect struck a victim in the head with a firearm," Sgt. MENLO PARK, California (AP) — Facebook and Instagram parent company Meta is keeping its promise to block news content in Canada on its platforms in response to a new law that requires tech giants to pay publishers for linking to or otherwise repurposing their content online.Google’s owner Alphabet has said it plans to do the same, although it does not appear to have followed through yet. The company said in a June blog post that it will begin removing news links in the country when the law takes effect — expected in December. Meta has threatened to block links to news sites in Canada for nearly a year in response to the law, which passed in late June.
