JACKSON, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi Republican Gov. Tate Reeves and Democratic challenger Brandon Presley insulted and spoke over each other several times Wednesday night in their only debate of a rough-and-tumble campaign season, presenting sharply contrasting plans for the state. The televised debate happened six days before the general election in a deeply conservative state where Republicans have held the governor’s office for the past 20 years.Presley said state government “is bought and sold to the highest bidder,” with Reeves demanding campaign contributions before meeting with people.Reeves said that Presley, a utility regulator, has taken questionable campaign contributions from “solar panel buddies … that have tried to run the oil business out of America.”The debate was held before a small audience in the WAPT-TV studio in Jackson. It aired on the ABC affiliate in the Jackson area and statewide on Mississippi Public Broadcasting. One flashpoint came in respon...World Series Champions

SANTIAGO, Chile (AP) — Two-time Olympic champion Kyle Snyder led the United States wrestling team to four Pan American gold medals on Wednesday, the first day of the event in Santiago. The 27-year-old, one of the top athletes competing in Chile, easily won all his bouts to secure his third consecutive continental title. The star wrestler’s teammates came close to dominating just as much, and just like Snyder they are likely to secure a spot in the Paris Olympics next year and fight for medals there, too. Snyder later said he had his mind in 2024 as soon as he won the final in Chile.“My next thing is just take a little break and get back on the main train,” Snyder told The Associated Press after his title bout. “We’ve got the holidays, then there’s a couple of tournaments, one in January, one February. I need to get ready for the Olympic trials, April 19th and 20th. That’s what I’m going to be looking forward to getting ready the most.”Snyder has been affected by injuries during...Williams, Hardaway lead unbeaten Mavericks to 114-105 victory over Bulls

Virginia Gov. Glenn Youngkin issued an executive order Wednesday aimed at bolstering the response to school-related drug overdoses, after at least eight opioid-related overdoses were reported last month at a high school in Loudoun County. The order directs the Virginia Department of Education to issue guidance to school divisions to notify all parents of school-connected overdoses within 24 hours, according to a news release from the governor’s office.Youngkin said Loudoun County Public Schools reportedly waited more than 20 days to notify parents of the overdoses.“Parents have a right to know what’s going on in their child’s lives, especially in schools. Overdoses that occur on school grounds or are connected to the school must lead to an immediate parental notification,” Youngkin said. “School administrators’ first instinct when there is a problem cannot be to delay relevant information on critical children’s health and safety matters.”The ...Drivers warned: Watch for wildlife as time changes

Hundreds of people gathered in Aventura to hear the horror of Oct. 7 first hand, from a survivor of the massacre at the Tribe of Nova music festival.Speaking at the Aventura Turnberry Jewish Center on Wednesday, Maya Parizar said the journey hasn’t been pretty, but she knows now the power of sharing her story.“For some miracle, I know I got to be here and tell their story, honoring their lives,” she said as she wiped away a tear.Music and massacre, two things that don’t have anything in common with each other, are Parizar’s reality now. She was one of 3,000 people who attended the open-air music festival in southern Israel.“It’s been 24 days, and it feels like just a nightmare,” she said. That nightmare, Parizar said, began around 6:30 a.m. on Oct. 7.“I just remember looking up there in the sky and see what it felt like thousands of rockets and missiles,” she said. That was her first sign to pack up and leave.Parizar said she...Latest news
