Popular 'low T' treatment is safe for men with heart disease, but doctors warn it's no youth serum

Testosterone replacement therapy is safe for men with “low T” who have heart disease or are at high risk for it, a new study suggests. But doctors warn the popular treatment is no “anti-aging tonic.”The research, published Friday in the New England Journal of Medicine, found that heart attacks, strokes and other major cardiac issues were no more common among those using testosterone gel than those using a placebo. That implies the gel is also safe for men without cardiovascular problems who have low T, said Dr. Steven Nissen, a cardiologist at the Cleveland Clinic and senior author of the study. But, he added, it doesn’t mean the treatment should be used by men without low T — a condition also known as hypogonadism that’s measured by levels of the sex hormone in the blood.“What we’ve shown here is that for a very specific group of men, testosterone can be given safely,” Nissen said. “But it is not to be given as an anti-aging tonic for widespread use in men who are aging.” More than...

Alexandra Whiteley is the senior author of a study about ALS and assistant professor in the Department of Biochemistry (Courtesy photo / CU Boulder)A University of Colorado Boulder study has discovered a new protein believed to play a role in causing ALS, giving researchers a new direction for potential treatments. The research suggests that the protein, known as PEG10, changes cell behavior in ways that lead to ALS when it’s present at high levels in nerve tissue. The protein is ancient and virus-like, known for its role in aiding the development of the placenta and preventing cancer progression. However, when it’s overly abundant in the wrong places, it may also cause disease.“The fact that PEG10 is likely contributing to this disease means we may have a new target for treating ALS,” said Alexandra Whiteley, senior author of the study and assistant professor in the Department of Biochemistry, in a news release. “For a terrible disease in which there are no effective therapeutics tha...
