NEW YORK (AP) — Defending champions Miki Sudo and Joey Chestnut have continued their reign in Nathan's Famous Fourth of July hot dog eating contest. Sudo forced down 39 1/2 hot dogs and buns to claim a ninth women's title in Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July hot dog eating contest, before stormy weather moved in and delayed the men's competition.Sudo beat Mayoi Ebihara’s 33 1/2 hot dogs in 10 minutes Tuesday in a contest that appeared to be much closer until the final count was announced. The unofficial real-time counter showed the two women tied throughout much of the competition. A final count of plates settled the score.Sudo, 37, was disappointed in her winning total, which was nine hot dogs short of her all-time high. She said competition from the 27-year-old Ebihara had thrown her off. Published Tue, 04 Mar 2025 09:20:03 GMT

AUSTIN (KXAN) — Many of us will sit back this Fourth of July to take in dazzling fireworks shows — but have you ever wondered how fireworks get their colors? Meteorologist Kristen Currie showed us the science behind this annual tradition. Austin Symphony holds concert and firework show Fireworks contain gunpowder and an element like copper or sodium. Special effects, like gold sparks, are typically created by iron filings and charcoal. Loud bangs are produced by aluminum powder. Although setting off fireworks can be exhilarating, local first responders are asking you to attend professional fireworks shows as opposed to buying at-home-use fireworks and sparklers."Fireworks are simply too dangerous and unpredictable to be used safely by consumers,” Travis County Fire Marshal Tony Callaway said, in part, in a re...
