Some South Florida families took a dip into water safety this weekend. The Embrace Girls Foundation and Cox Media Group teamed up to host a free community event that aimed to teach children and parents how to stay safe under the sun.The event, held Saturday at Topeekeegee Yugnee Park in Hollywood, was a fun yet educational day of activities, food and giveaways.Parents, caregivers and children learned drowning prevention tools.“We have CPR; reach, throw, don’t go; simple safety measures around water; and then some fun events as well,” said Ralph Renzi, vice president and general manager of COX Media Group Miami, “and once they finish, they get all their stamps on their passport, they get a big prize when they show they’ve completed the stations and they’ve been educated, and it’s a really fun way to learn and be safe.”According to the World Health Organization, drowning is the third leading cause of unintentional death, emphasizing just ...Cody Bellinger’s slam leads the Chicago Cubs in a 10-4 win, while Marcus Stroman remains open to an offseason reunion

Cody Bellinger has tried to keep things simple. The Chicago Cubs center fielder has avoided delving too much into the specifics of the mechanical adjustments he has made since signing with the organization in the offseason. Much of his success has stemmed from a mindset and approach that allows him to embrace his athleticism and limits overthinking while getting his timing in sync. Results have backed up his process, leading Bellinger to produce like the 2019 version that won him the National League MVP award.“He’s been more than expected since he’s been here,” manager David Ross said Saturday. “He’s the total package: the defense, the clubhouse presence, the bat and the power showing up. … He really put a lot of work into the offseason, made some adjustments and came here to prove the player that he was, and he’s proven it.”Bellinger’s grand slam served as the big blow in the Cubs’ six-run third inning Saturday to blo...‘They played to win’: Chicago White Sox get timely hitting and pitching in a 6-5 victory against the Atlanta Braves

Jake Burger got in an 0-2 hole against Atlanta Braves pitcher Spencer Strider with two outs in the sixth inning of Saturday’s tied game at Truist Park. What does one do in that spot against the pitcher with the most strikeouts in the majors?“I was just staying short and not trying to get too big,” Burger said. That approach worked. Burger connected on the next pitch, driving the ball over the right-field wall for a go-ahead solo homer.A night after getting blanked, the Sox bounced back against one of the top pitchers in the National League and beat the Braves 6-5 in front of 43,344.“He’s a great pitcher,” Burger said. “We went into the game knowing we had our hands full and we’re going to have to buy into our approach and make sure we’re swinging at the right pitch. Fortunately it fell our way today.”Strider struck out five of the first six batters. The Sox put together a series of nice at-bats in the third.Zach Remillard and...Orioles’ Cedric Mullins exits game vs. Marlins with right quadriceps injury: ‘We’re hoping we caught a break there’

Orioles center fielder Cedric Mullins exited Saturday’s game against the Miami Marlins in the second inning with right quadriceps tightness, the team announced. After hitting an RBI single in the second inning, Mullins sprinted around the bases on a near-double from Jordan Westburg that was ruled foul. Mullins appeared to motion toward the dugout before gingerly walking off the field.Rookie Colton Cowser, who made his major league debut last week, replaced Mullins on the base paths and in center field. The appearance marks Cowser’s Camden Yards debut. The lower-body injury could be extra concerning for Mullins, who missed a month earlier this season with a right groin strain he suffered May 29. That injury also came on the bases, as the 28-year-old speedster was placed on the 10-day injured list after suffering the strain while sprinting to first base.“We’ll check on it tomorrow,” manager Brandon Hyde said after the Orioles’ 6-5 win. “I think ...Aaron Boone sees Giancarlo Stanton getting where he needs to be: ‘Sometimes it’s taken him a little bit’

DENVER — It’s taken some time, but Giancarlo Stanton is starting to look like the hitter he and the Yankees expect him to be.While the team’s offense is struggling mightily, Stanton crushed a two-run home run in the first inning of Friday’s loss to the Rockies. In doing so, the slugger gave the Yankees their only runs of the game. He added a double as well.Entering Saturday’s game, Stanton had 11 RBI and 11 hits in his last 11 games. He also totaled seven runs scored, three doubles and four homers over that span while registering a .290/.386/.684 slash line and just seven strikeouts.“He’s getting there,” Aaron Boone said Saturday afternoon. “It’s timing. It’s rhythm. It’s that subtle load that he has within his legs and his hands. So he’s getting into that good position to make a good swing decision.”Stanton has appeared far more comfortable at the plate than he did after first coming off the injured...Mets drop 4th straight despite Kodai Senga’s strong outing in loss to Dodgers

The Mets haven’t had much to celebrate this season, and there wasn’t much to celebrate Saturday night when they dropped their fourth straight, but the emergence of Kodai Senga is as promising of development as anything else in Queens right now.The Los Angeles Dodgers downed the Mets 5-1 at Citi Field in the second game of a three-game series, but it was no fault of Senga. The Japanese rookie gave the Mets six innings of one-run baseball and left with the game tied at 1-1.The loss was charged to right-hander Adam Ottavino (0-4), who struggled through the eighth inning but limited the damage to just one run. With runners on the corners and one out, the Mets couldn’t turn a 3-6-3 double play. Pete Alonso’s high throw to Francisco Lindor prevented them from getting the runner at first in time and allowed Max Muncy to score from third. The Mets (42-50) have scored only four runs over their last four games. They had runners on the corners in the eighth with none out...Latest news
